What is the Clean Transportation Fuels Standard?

What will it do?

A Clean Transportation Fuels Standard (CTFS) will reduce the carbon intensity of the fuels used in transportation—including cars and trucks—including how a fuel is produced, refined, distributed, and consumed.

New Mexico’s CTFS would set benchmarks to reduce fuel carbon intensity 20% below 2018 levels by 2030, and 30% below by 2040—the equivalent of taking all the cars and trucks registered in New Mexico off the road for an entire year.

New Mexico has the chance to become a national leader in the production of clean fuels, such as electricity, biodiesel, renewable diesel, ethanol, renewable dimethyl ether (rDME), renewable propane , renewable natural gas, direct air capture, and green hydrogen. Electric vehicles are rapidly increasing market share and using renewable electricity to run those cars and trucks will vastly reduce carbon output.

The CTFS will attract companies from all over the nation to invest in New Mexico to produce clean fuels. New investments mean a revitalized energy sector and good-paying jobs for the residents of our state. The result: an economic boom for New Mexico.

The CTFS is a proven policy to decarbonize transportation, reduce air pollution and the resulting negative health impacts, promote economic development, and provide drivers with lower-priced options at the pump.
